Piano Man

Billy Joel ගෙ Piano Man හෑල්ල

It’s nine o’clock on a Saturday
The regular crowd shuffles in
There’s an old man sittin’ next to me
Makin’ love to his tonic and gin

He says, “Son can you play me a memory?
I’m not really sure how it goes
But it’s sad and it’s sweet and I knew it complete
When I wore a younger man’s clothes”

Sing us a song, you’re the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, we’re all in the mood for a melody
And you’ve got us feelin’ alright

Now John at the bar is a friend of mine
He gets me my drinks for free
And he’s quick with a joke, or to light up your smoke
But there’s some place that he’d rather be

He says, “Bill, I believe this is killing me”
As a smile ran away from his face
”Well, I’m sure that I could be a movie star
If I could get out of this place”

Now Paul is a real estate novelist
Who never had time for a wife
And he’s talkin’ with Davy, who’s still in the navy
And probably will be for life

And the waitress is practicing politics
As the businessmen slowly get stoned
Yes, they’re sharing a drink they call loneliness
But it’s better than drinkin’ alone

And the piano, it sounds like a carnival
And the microphone smells like a beer
And they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar
And say man what are you doin’ here?

This is really a rant with zero point. I don’t have the musical or literary depth to write this stuff, but I’ve been in bed all day so depth doesn’t matter.

Billy Joel’s Piano Man has been on repeat in my playlist. It’s the first song I ever heard of his. Written in 1973 after he worked at a Los Angeles bar during a tough personal phase, capturing the scenes he witnessed.

Told entirely from the POV of the piano artist.

It’s nine o’clock on a Saturday
The regular crowd shuffles in
There’s an old man sittin’ next to me
Makin’ love to his tonic and gin

Saturday night is the prime chill time. Crawling into a pub after a long week to grab a drink and clear the mind. Old man next to him, drowning his solitude in gin and tonic.

Sing us a song, you’re the piano man
Sing us a song tonight

The whole bar comes together asking the piano man to play something to soothe their tired souls.

Then John the Bartender—a solid friend who gives him free drinks. A guy who could have been a movie star next to John Wayne if he got out of that place.

Then Paul, the real estate novelist who never had time for a wife, chatting with Davy, who will probably stay in the Navy for life.

People sharing a drink called loneliness. Better than drinking alone.

Whenever I listen to this, it reminds me of winding down after brutal workdays over a cold beer. A bar full of broken, chaotic lives, with piano keys echoing softly in the background.

Next time we meet, let’s grab a beer and listen to Billy Joel.
