As she wetted her lips with a glass of condensed milk and looked at me, my memory drifted to Queen Marie Antoinette of King Louis XVI, who looked upon starving peasants begging for bread and famously barked, “If they have no bread, let them eat cake.”

I wonder if a corner of her heart still remembers how, five years ago, I too begged for bread from that five-foot-tall girl with curly hair resting on her shoulders.

Before her, the only cake I ever knew was Apple Cake from Wasana Bakers. But every time we met, she got me hooked on cheesecake, subjecting me to her command for four full years.
